getting fit for punta cana…

Dear Diary,

I am declaring today the official start day of getting in shape for my trip to Punta Cana.  This, dear diary, is the beautiful destination fuelling my motivation:

Isn’t it gorgeous?!?  I’ll be there at the end of April 2018 for my best friend’s wedding – I’m so excited!!!

I do NOT want to look back at this trip and only remember feeling bad about myself and my size.  Instead I want to look back and remember feeling confident and attractive.  I want to remember that I confidently participated in activities like beach volleyball, and dancing at the nightclub with the rest of the wedding group etc.  I want to know that I put in my very best effort possible in the weeks and months leading up to the trip to feel confident.

When I went to Vegas two years ago for my 40th birthday I had just come off of a marathon training cycle and was ¾ of the way through a half ironman training cycle.  I was fit and very confident. I looked and felt great – as a result I had a fantastic time.  I know that may seem shallow, but that’s just me being honest with you.

After that half ironman my motivation came apart at the seams, but I’m ready not to again make the sacrifices needed in order to reach my goals.  I have reached that point where I’m tired of feeling tired, and I’m tired of getting frustrated with having to buy new clothes because my old clothes no longer fit.  I’m tired of all of my runs feeling like crap. I’m tired of barely being able to keep up with my boot camp class.  I am ready to get fit again.

Yesterday I shared my goals for the month of August, and now I have to come up with a way to track my progress…

I’m well aware that the scale does not measure fitness.  So with that in mind, I will still track and report my weight, but my key focus will be on different numbers: Body fat percentage, waist, hips, thighs, bust and upper arm circumference, and how active I’m being.  My goal is to lose fat and inches.

Here are my starting stats:

Weight: 136.1 lbs

Body Fat: 36.3

Waist: 32 inches

Hips: 40 inches

Thighs: 20 inches (ea)

Upper Arm:

(According to my FitBit Aria stats, when I went to Vegas my body fat percentage was 28.9, and my weight was 122.9 lbs)

Here are some “before” pictures that I took in the washroom after my run today:

I’m hoping that this trip will serve as the motivation I need to make healthy food choices and to be more active.  I’ll only take progress pictures and progress measurements once a month. It’ll be hard for me mentally not to seek out that feedback during the month, so during the month I’ll be putting my focus on meeting my activity goals.  I know with perseverance and consistency that I can do this!
