The other day I received a package of three new cold pressed lemonades from Well Canada to try. I was pretty excited because I’ve never tried cold pressed juices before, but have always wanted too.
From their press release:
What first started out as a small operation between two friends, has quickly turned WELL Canada into one of the largest growing cold pressed juice brands in the country, specialized in combining natural, raw ingredients to create superfood beverages unlike any other in the market.
The Well INK cold pressed lemonades come in three flavours, I’ll list them in order of favourite to least favourite (though all are nutritious and delicious):
Well INK Spirolina Lemonade
Ingredients: Filtered Water, Lemon, Honey, Ginger, Spirulina
This one tastes the most “Lemony” as you would expect traditional lemonade to taste. Spirulina is a nutrient rich substance (actually a cyanobacteria) and it boasts its fair share of health promoting properties. It is rich in Chlorophyll, and like plants, gets its energy from the sun. Spirulina is a natural “algae” powder that is incredibly high in protein and a good source of antioxidants, B-vitamins and other nutrients. It is also a good source of iron. Spirulina also has a distinct flavour. Since flavour is derived from smell and spirulina is found naturally in ponds, I can only describe that flavour as “pond”. It is a very faint flavour in this lemonade as the lemon flavour over powers the spirulina.
Well INK Cayenne Lemonade
Ingredients: Filtered Water, Lemon, Coconut Nectar
Cayenne pepper has numerous benefits: it’s used to help digestion, including heal upset stomach, slow intestinal gas, stop stomach pain, cure diarrhea and as a natural remedy for cramps. It is also rumoured to be a good hangover cure 🙂 I liked this lemonade, but found it to be mildly spicy – but in a good way. It is tasty, but I wouldn’t drink a large glass after a run. It’s more of a lemonade that you would sip on a deck in the evening after dinner.
Well INK Charcoal Lemonade
Ingredients: Activated Charcoal, Lemon Juice, Filtered Water and Coconut Nectar
Activated charcoal is considered to be the most effective single agent available as an emergency decontaminant in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, which includes the stomach and intestines. It adsorbs most organic toxins, chemicals and poisons before they can harm the body. Some Emergency Rooms administer large doses of activated charcoal for certain types of poisoning. I had never tasted activated charcoal before. In this lemonade it is mild but unique. I can’t say that I “loved” it, but it was tolerable.
WELL stands out from the rest. With no additives or preservatives in any of their products, WELL uses simple, natural ingredients and combines the best of nature’s candy to produce superfood beverages that are high in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. WELL only uses high pressure processing (HPP) technology, a cold pasteurization technique which subjects previously sealed product to highs level of hydrostatic pressure which is transmitted by water. Unlike other techniques which incorporates thermal or chemical treatments, which typically comprises the integrity of the original product, HPP is natural, environmentally friendly and respects the nutritional properties of the original product. It inactivates the vegetative flora in the product (such as bacteria and mould), which not only helps extend shelf life, but also ensures that all WELL juice products are just as fresh at consumption as when it was made. From the ingredients and straight to the packaging, WELL makes sure that all their drinks are the freshest and healthiest they can be. Not to mention your tastebuds will fall in love at first sip!
